Why it’s the best…
Here I tell about the design of the retriever. I was developing it for the last 10 years. During this time I had made more than 50 samples, different in one way or other. I gave many of them to my friends, some of them are still in the drawer. Not only my experience, but also experience of all the people whom I gave the retriever for a try are combined in this lure retriever. Every detail has been worked out many times.
At present time I'm obtaining a patent on my retriever, so I think that in the nearest future I'll proudly publish its number on this site.
So let’s start moving from the lure to the fisherman.
The front loop. It’s the detail of the retriever which catches different parts of the lure, tackle, etc and by doing this it makes possible to retrieve the lure. The loop is made of a solid plate of cold-rolled stainless steel. Why I use this material? There are 3 reasons. 1st – it’s very strong. The loop is the main detail of the retriever, it’s exposed to maximal stress. Fault of this detail means that the lure will stay on the bottom, that’s why the material must be very strong, and the detail itself must be cut out from a solid plate of steel. 2nd – it’s durable. I think there’s nothing to comment. The 3rd reason is not as obvious as the previous too.
Let’s imagine that the material has oxidized right in the place of contact of the line with the surface of the front loop (the corrosion appeared). Due to this the retriever will cause abrasive effect to the line during each use. The line will wear off and you’ll have to change it more often, but it’s not the main point. Imagine other situation: you’ve been fishing all day long and haven’t caught any fish. And just when you’re ready to leave there’s a bite! You hook it…and the ravel of the line is hanging at the end of your spinning. That’s disturbing, isn’t it?
And by the way that’s why the top part of the loop which constantly touches the line is given the mirror-like polish.
Let’s go further and talk about the shape of the front loop. At the external contour it’s maximally streamline. This makes it easier for the retriever to get into snags and turn back. By the way, when I was only starting making retrievers I had lost quite a lot of them due to their wrong construction. But later I solved this problem and I haven’t lost a single retriever in the last 4 years.
Now we should return to the front loop. The internal contour is more complicated then the external one. I was experimenting with its shape for long time, trying to find the best one. And I think I succeeded in it. The external sides aren’t placed at 90° to the surface of the metal plate. They also have coning so that the retriever could catch swivels and lures even more easily. I must notice that if the angle of the sides is too wide, the retriever will start inverting loops of swivels. It seems to be insignificant, but up to 30% of swivel’s strength is lost in such case, and this may determine whether the lure will be saved or lost. The angle of the whole front loop’s plate and grained inner surface are also important for optimal performance. They help to narrow the angle of the swivel-line curve, and by this to increase the strength of the connection. The angle of the front loop curve is also important when the retriever goes behind the tackle element which has to be caught. If the angle was just a bit wider it would be hard for retriever to get behind it, a bit narrower – the retriever wouldn’t be able to catch it.
There’s also a clip on the front loop which doesn’t let the line get out of the loop. I used to use retrievers without this clip, but I had to be very careful with them. I also couldn’t release the line of grass when the retriever was on it, put the retriever on the bottom and go to the other side of the bush at the bank, throw it over the obstruction by swinging it on the line and much more.
So I think this element is just inevitable.
Now let’s talk about the central part of the retriever. It is so to say the “body” of the retriever to which other elements are attached. It has a cylindrical form. It’s maximally streamline, and the minimal area is contacting the environment when the mass is large. It’s a substantial advantage when you retrieve lures at flow. I think you’ve already paid attention that the retriever has a prolonged form. There are 3 reasons why it’s so. 1st – the weigh of the retriever is allotted between 2 points between which there’s a substantial distance. This helps the retriever to go further down the line when the inclination angle is rather narrow. 2nd – it allows the retriever getting into underwater obstructions and back without getting caught into them. 3rd – it won’t let the retriever to turn around on the line and you’ll be able to use the rope of the retriever as a sail on the flow.
At the same time the central part is the ballast of the retriever, providing it the necessary weight. I came to a conclusion that the light weight of the retriever is better than heavy weight. I’ve also described how to make the retriever heavier. This way there will be no necessity to have many retrievers – this one is enough as it can be adjusted to any fishing conditions. By the way I should mention that I usually do with the retriever’s own weight.
The back ring. It’s made of the stainless wire and has the shape of a big clasp. You just have to unhook it, place the line and hook it again. Now the line will stay in place. The ring itself is shut along the “body” of the retriever. This excludes the possibility of getting caught by the ring in underwater obstructions when getting the retriever out. And of course such attachment of the ring excludes vibrations during the retriever’s moving down the line which increases its working distance.
Now only the pass-through ring is left. It’s brazed for increasing its strength. Its function is to hold the whole retriever. The retriever’s rope is attached to it. To tell the truth, some of my friends use a piece of a rope instead of this ring thinking that every additional element is the weak point. Well, that’s their right to do it. Also the ring allows using a thicker rope, getting it through with the help of a thin line and to making the retriever heavier with sinkers of any type.
The combination of the abovementioned allowed me to create a tool which is able to save lures and tackles with the incredible efficiency in any conditions. I don’t simply say that this retriever is the best, I prove it with everything I’ve described above. And you can also make sure that it is so after watching the video in which the retriever’s performance is demonstrated.
I think you’ve already noticed that the retriever doesn’t have any lead parts. I just think that we all should stop making the deposits of heavy metals of waters. I hope that my retriever will help to decrease the amount of lead which we leave in waters. By the way it’s one of the reasons why I reveal my secret which this retriever was. Owing to this retriever I was able to catch fish in places which others just passed by.
